Implementing a GTFS routing server

My intention is to setup a GTFS routing service for my region.
I was inspired by the instructions on github for setting up a reader-gtfs.

I downloaded a GTFS file, and an OSM extract.
I downloaded the last graphhopper webservice jar here.
put everything in a folder
adapted a config-pt.yml see below
run java -Xmx8g -jar graphhopper-web-10.0.jar server config-pt.yml
needed to remove foot_road_access in the encoded_values of the config file because it generated an error

I also copy here the config-pt.yml that I adapted from the example on github:

My issue: only foot is available. How can I activate the transit? This discussion didn’t help me.

What error did you get when you specify profile=pt in the request?

Also did you try the UI located at localhost:8989/maps/pt? As the tiles API key is outdated in older versions make sure you use the latest master.

That was a fast answer !
OK now it is more clear to me.
I tried:

localhost:8989/maps/pt this leave an empty, white page
localhost:8989 opens the client, and then I see profile=foot in the url http://localhost:8989/maps/?profile=foot&layer=OpenStreetMap so
I tried http://localhost:8989/maps/?profile=pt&layer=OpenStreetMap but then read this message in the route box The requested profile 'pt' does not exist. Available profiles: [foot] and no visible way to shift to pt through the interface (only a pedestrian icon is visible)

ps could you explain more this “As the tiles API key is outdated in older versions make sure you use the latest master.” But I made sure I used the most recent graphhopper-web as in the link of the main github page: https://repo1.maven.org/maven2/com/graphhopper/graphhopper-web/10.0/graphhopper-web-10.0.jar

Unfortunately at the moment you will need to recompile the latest version from the master branch to see the public transit UI (the /route endpoint and the /maps UI still work). See the fix in Maps for public transport does not display · Issue #3087 · graphhopper/graphhopper · GitHub. Note that the web API (/route) is different to the public transit UI (/maps/pt/).

To build graphhopper from master branch just clone the repository and run mvn:

git clone https://github.com/graphhopper/graphhopper
cd graphhopper
mvn clean install -DskipTests

then use web/target/graphhopper-web-11.0-SNAPSHOT.jar to start it. Then you should see something like:

I just copied this from the browser network console but you only need the following parameters: point (2x), profile, pt.earliest_departure_time and pt.limit_street_time.

You need a JDK that mvn can find. I think you only have a JRE and this not sufficient as it comes without the compiler javac.

Indeed, I installed Java JDK which was missing.
Was able to

successfully compile a graphhopper-web-11.0-SNAPSHOT.jar
copy it in my folder
had to reverse and re introduce the parameter foot_road_access in the encoded_values of the config file
run java -Xmx8g -jar graphhopper-web-11.0-SNAPSHOT.jar server config-pt.yml
localhost:8989 shows me the OSM map, without overlay of transit stops though, lets me route walking trips in Nord-Pas-de-Calais, fine

but then

same issue with http://localhost:8989/maps/?profile=pt&layer=OpenStreetMap with a red message The requested profile 'pt' does not exist. Available profiles: [foot]
same issue of a totally empty web page with localhost:8989/maps/pt
adapted your suggested url into http://localhost:8989/route?point=50.638012%2C3.067779&point=50.326466%2C2.981175&pt.earliest_departure_time=2025-05-15T17%3A10%3A33Z&pt.arrive_by=false&locale=en-US&profile=pt&pt.profile=false&pt.access_profile=foot&pt.beta_access_time=1&pt.egress_profile=foot&pt.beta_egress_time=1&pt.profile_duration=PT120M&pt.limit_street_time=PT30M&pt.ignore_transfers=false to match my region, and obtained a seemingly JSON result of a PT trip, this is encouraging

My question now is, yes this seems to work in the background, but how to I see the transit UI?

Great!

This is the UI which has no support for pt. If you need the UI you have to use maps/pt/. Hopefully at some point in the future we’ll merge both UIs to make it less confusing.

Strange, this shouldn’t be. What errors do you see in the browser console?

Also can you check what the latest commit is?

I found my error: missing trailing slash “/” ! As is written in the readme from the beginning.

So the solution is simply to replace localhost:8989/maps/pt into localhost:8989/maps/pt/
