this is a slightly different kind of post, but I’m hoping I might reach one or two of you here who would be interested in contributing.
As part of my Master’s thesis at Technische Universität Berlin, within the Division of Biopsychology and Neuroergonomics, I am investigating the practical implementation of landmark-based navigation – that is, the integration of salient features of the environment, such as shops, distinctive buildings, or other easily recognizable points of reference, into digital navigation systems.
While previous research at our division has explored landmark-based navigation as a potential tool to support spatial orientation, I’m interested in the practical side of it: Where could this actually be useful, for whom, and how would it need to be designed to work well in real navigation products? I’m also interested in what might stand in the way of implementing it – whether that’s related to technology, data, product design, or other practical constraints.
For this purpose, I am looking for people with practical experience in areas such as navigation and routing, map and geospatial data, software or product development, user experience, or product strategy. Since many people in the GraphHopper community are involved in routing and the development of related applications, I am hoping to gather some valuable perspectives here.
Participation involves completing a written online questionnaire with open-ended questions. There is no interview or scheduled appointment, and the questionnaire can be completed flexibly at your own pace. Previous experience specifically with landmark-based navigation is not required, as I am particularly interested in your practical perspective on the topic.
